Protecting Your Client: Recognizing and Reporting Suspected Elder/Dependent Adult Abuse and Fraud
Presented by Cynthia J. Thorp, JD
This program addresses the increasingly significant problems of elder abuse and fraud. This presentation will address how to recognize the many types of elder and dependent adult abuse, and what can and must be done if you suspect elder or dependent adult abuse or neglect. Just like child abuse, California has mandatory reporting laws that require most professionals dealing with elders and dependent adults to report suspected elder abuse. If you are not mandated to report, other concerned persons (except attorneys) are still allowed and encouraged to report the suspected abuse so the people involved can get help. The program will address how attorneys can protect their clients and get help if they suspect elder or dependent adult abuse. Important intervention principles such as least restrictive services and right to self-determination will also be discussed. Finally, this presentation will address community resources that are available to assist with the challenging and multi-faceted problems of elder abuse and fraud.
This program offers 1 hour of CE for legal, accounting, insurance and CFP (pending approvals).
